Stuart of Bute

Stuarts of Bute are descended from the natural son of King Robert II. The use of this tartan is normally considered to be for the family of the Marquis of Bute, though others more or less closely related have likewise claimed an interest. Whether or not this pattern (STWR:1485) was in use before the publication of the Vestiarium Scoticum, is not known. There is a popular maroon version called the 'Stuart of Bute hunting' which does not have the approval of the Marquis. STWR:2505.
